Not every traffic citation is the same. Some are civil infractions that mean a fine and points. Others are crimes, with a court date, possible jail, and a permanent record. The first step is knowing which one you have, because paying a ticket counts as admitting it.
Two Kinds of Traffic Cases
• Criminal traffic offenses: DUI, Driving While License Suspended, Leaving the Scene, Fleeing & Eluding, reckless driving, dangerous excessive speeding, and driving without a valid license. These require a court appearance, and a conviction is a criminal record.
• Civil traffic tickets: speeding, running a light, careless driving, and similar violations. There's no jail, but points add up. (The exception is extreme speeding: since July 1, 2025, driving 50+ mph over the limit, or 100+ mph in a dangerous manner, is a crime.) Too many points in a short period can lead to a license suspension.
Before You Pay
Paying a ticket is a conviction for driving-record purposes. For some drivers, especially those with prior suspensions, commercial licenses, or several recent tickets, one more conviction can trigger a suspension or even habitual traffic offender status. Options can include contesting the ticket, electing a driver improvement course where eligible, or negotiating a reduction.
